The happy cookoo
While returning home, I heard a happy cookoo
that had just crossed the seas to this small island.
Chorus:
Hol ya kee,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hol-ya-cookoo,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hol-ya-cookoo,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hol-ya-cookoo,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hoy
And the first cookoo of the season, sang in the woods
the same as the first cookoo that ever sang.
Chorus:
Hol ya kee,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hol-ya-cookoo cookoo,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hol-ya-cookoo cookoo,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hol-ya-cookoo cookoo,
Hol-ya-kee-kee a hoy
I turned to search the greenwood of the hedge,
to look between the branches where the gentle harp was.
Chorus (cookoo x3)
I walked until I returned beneath my birchwood,
and there was the cookoo singing above my head.
Chorus (cookoo x4)
Oh thank you, cookoo, that we should meet here;
I dried my eyes, and the cookoo flew away.
Chorus (cookoo x5)
